Fort Worth Starts Animal Adoption Campaign
FORT WORTH (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
If you're in Fort Worth you'll likely see more stray animals this month, but they won't be on the street. The strays are part of a citywide campaign to lure people into animal control to adopt rescued dogs.
Scrappy is having a busy day. He's part of a month-long push to adopt a rescue dog.
Part of the campaign includes having mobile adoption clinics - like the one at Fort Worth City Hall. "And these are all new to us. Mobile adoption, this year is the first time we've ever done this," explained David Fulbright with Fort Worth Animal Control. "So we're experimenting as we go along. We find out what works, and we go from there."
The city is also cutting the cost of adoption in half for the month of October. City officials are hoping the campaign will help stem an overwhelming number of animal control cases.
Fort Worth animal control handled more than 22,000 animals last year. Of those, 15,287 had to be euthanized.
It's hoped would-be pet owners will be lured in by the lower adoption prices. "Which makes it even better, because I've got four kids at home and we're on a budget. So that makes it very well," said Pam Burroughs who is adopting a pet.
Remember Scrappy? Burroughs is taking him home.
Animal control is asking for help in their awareness campaign. They're not just looking for people to adopt animals, but also volunteers to help overloaded animal control officers at events.
