Dallas Residents Protest New Animal Control Plan
DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
Dog and pet lovers protested at Dallas City Hall Monday against a new and tougher animal control proposal.
Despite their concerns, the Dallas City Council approved tough language for a new pet proposal. The council will decide if it will become a law in June.
Dallas officials say the plan targets dangerous dog owners and will also help control the exploding pet populations.
Dallas officials say strays are reaching crisis proportions. An average of 500 dogs and cats are euthanized each week. While 10,000 pets were adopted last year, about 27,000 pets had to be euthanized. Commission members say the deaths are pointless.
The plan would also limit dogs and cats in one home to just six, and require mandatory spaying and neutering of any dog or cat at 6 months.
If the plan goes into effect, pure-bred breeders would need a $500 license, but limits only one litter a year. The plan would also call for an end to tethering and more humane standards for animal enclosures.
