Lily Tomlin Pushes For Jenny To Be Sent To Tenn.
DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
The future of
Jenny the Elephant at the
Dallas Zoo is getting national attention again.
Actress and animal advocate
Lily Tomlin spoke to the Dallas City Council Wednesday, trying to convince them to send Jenny to the
Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee.
"She's driven by physical and emotional pain. She's been known to have broken steel cables with her head. She has self-mutilated with her tusks. She sways out of depression for hours on end, and she's often drugged to restrain her rage," said Tomlin.
In August,
city leaders decided it would be best for Jenny to stay at the Dallas Zoo. There, officials planned on creating a new elephant habitat, and another African elephant would be brought to Dallas to be Jenny's companion.
At least one member of the city council agrees with Tomlin.
"I understand that you're meeting with Miss Tomlin tomorrow," Councilman Mitchell Rasansky said to Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert. "I would like for you to consider doing some soul searching. I think Dallas has made a mistake."
The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee has offered to transport Jenny at no cost to the City of Dallas.
