Owner Of Dallas Pet Hotel Apologizes For Dog Death

DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― Fond memories are all that Bill and Bettye Seitz have of their dog, Sammy.

"We've had two Chows before him, but he was the friendliest and nicest dog we've ever had," explained Bill.

The couple left their 4-year-old Chow in the care of Pet Resort Dallas on West Mockingbird Lane, just before they left town for the holiday weekend. "I've been crying for three day. They killed our dog. He died in the heat," Bettye said sadly.

On July 2, the temperature in Dallas reached 102 degrees. The Seitz's say they gave strict instructions to keep their dog out of the heat.

The owner of Pet Resort says Sammy was outside, in the yard, with plenty of water, for no longer than 30 minutes. When the dog came back inside, he collapsed.

According to the owner, workers tried to cool Sammy down with water and ice before rushing him to a nearby pet hospital.

The normal body temperature for any is dog is 101.5-degrees, but according to the vet report, Sammy's temperature was 110 degrees when he got to the Love Field Pet Hospital.

The findings from the veterinarian's and the examining doctor both suggest that heat stress was the cause of death. "It seems like a no-brainer that any dog with fur on it should not be out in the Texas heat," said Bill.

Pet Resort owner Jim Ezell declined to speak on camera, but offered an apology off camera. "I realize that pets are part of the family. I take full responsibility," he said.

The Seitz's say Pet Resort paid for the vet bill, but have not contacted them since Sammy's death. "I'm just sick. He was our baby. We're senior citizens. We have no children in the home," Bettye said talking about her beloved pet.

Despite their grief, the couple says they will eventually open their hearts up again - to another Chow.
