This May Be The Filthiest Apartment In Dallas
DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
When police and animal control officers arrived at a Northeast Dallas apartment Thursday morning, they found animal waste layered with filth and maggots that may have been building up for more than a year.
Jose Luis-Cabrera lives next door and was hired to clean up the mess left behind by a tenant who works for a security company and abandoned the apartment more than a week ago.
Police were called because of odor complaints and immediately notified animal control because cats began running out the door after living inside with no food or water for sometime.
"They could have starved to death in that time," said Jonnie England with Metroplex Animal Coalition. "There's evidence of empty food, but who knows when they had food even before they left."
England is trying to rescue any cats still hiding inside the unit. Authorities are considering criminal charges against the tenant for neglect.
Upstairs, an open area of filth and animal feces is so overpowering, it's unhealthy to go near without wearing a mask.
Police have the tenant's name, but haven't been able to track him down. He has been evicted from the apartment.
