Dallas Neighborhood Fights Back Against Pit Bulls
By Marianne Martinez
DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
Dozens of people who live in the Preston Royal area in Dallas
packed a meeting to rid their neighborhood of two pit bulls.
The dogs have attacked two people.
The animals are in quarantine now, but that's not good enough for
some people.
They want the dogs
destroyed.
Debbie O'Connor is one of those injured.
"If they were my dogs and they attacked
someone," she said, "I would euthanize them."
The dogs attacked O'Connor on March 30.
They injured her hand and bit off part of her
dog's ear.
This past weekend, the dogs attacked David Spoede and his
dog.
Today residents packed a meeting about the problem.
Many of them asked the city to euthanize the
dogs.
"What's going to happen next time?" asked one.
"Are we going to have a child attacked or a death?"
But animal control says the attacks were not severe enough
to warrant euthanizing the dogs.
Instead, the dogs' owner, John Harris, will have to meet
four requirements:
--The dogs must be secured and enclosed at all times.
--Each dog must be fitted with an identifying microchip.
--He must put up signs that read "Dangerous Dog."
--He must carry at least $100,000 dollars in liability
insurance.
While the city will not require Harris to remove the dogs, Harris
said he will not bring them back to the neighborhood.
"We don't have any interest in creating a bad environment in
the neighborhood," Harris said.
"We don't
want to see anyone get hurt."
Harris says he doesn't know what he's going to do with the
dogs.
He says he might give them to a
friend or to an animal shelter.
