Some Haltom City Residents Want Pit Bulls Banned

HALTOM CITY (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― Lori Fielder will go to city hall Monday to ask the Haltom City Council to pass stricter pit bull laws. Her dog was killed in a put bull attack. Now she is joining several others who say something needs to be done.

"It was the worst thing I ever saw. I mean, I never saw a mutilated animal before," said Fielder.

She said she was devastated when she came home and saw her Sheltie mix in the backyard.

"She was laying on the ground lifeless. I just knew she was dead," she said.

Two pit bulls next door dug a hole under Fielder's fence and attacked 12-year-old Camry.

"It's affected my whole family, because they got attached to her," Fielder said.

"This four foot fence won't even slow a pit bull down," said Johnnie B. Lee, former Haltom City Mayor.

Lee is one of several people who have addressed the current city council, calling for a ban on pit bulls.

"They're not a family dog. In other words, I couldn't trust them if I had a small child," said Lee.

"I don't think it's really the dog -- that it's their fault. It's the person that raises it," said Lucy Flores.

Flores has two pit bulls. She said it would be unfair to outlaw her dogs.

"She hasn't bitten anyone. Kids have come up to her," said Flores.

At the least, Fielder wants pit bull owners to bare more responsibility. "Make sure that they're registered. Make sure they're safe and secure," she said.

She said her life without Camry will never be the same, "They took our girl. They took our girl away from us."

The two pit bulls in the attack have been euthanized.
