Roosters Seized In Dallas Cockfighting Operation

compiled from staff reports
DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― Dallas officials say it is the largest animal cruelty seizure in the city this year. Police and Animal Control officers removed more than 160 roosters from a backyard chicken coop on Borger St. in West Dallas.

They say the sound of birds fighting is what led them to search the home. Investigators say they uncovered evidence of a major cockfighting operation, including metal spurs and syringes they believe contained steroids.

CBS 11 Reporter J.D. Miles spokes with a man who was on the property. He defended the operation, saying the roosters are bred for meat, eggs and seed.

The birds were taken to the Dallas Animal Shelter. Authorities say some of them are worth as much as $50,000 each. A court hearing is scheduled for next week.

No arrests were made.
