Dallas Employees Stage Layoff Protest At City Hall
DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
Civilian employees with the City of Dallas are worried about impending layoffs and they are asking the city council to look for other ways to cut the city's budget.
In all, nearly 800 could lose their jobs, effective October 1st.
Dallas City Manager Mary Suhm's current budget proposal doesn't include laying off any sworn personnel - such as police officers and firefighter/paramedics.
The North Texas Association of Public Employees represents about 500 city employees in Dallas and is asking the city to make cuts elsewhere. The organization did come up with a list of cost saving measures. The NTAPE suggests pay cuts for managerial staffers, a 6-12-month spending freeze, delaying the installation of lights on the jogging path at White Rock Lake, a moratorium on the enforcement of tax incentive districts and property tax evaluations on mansions in the city.
The City Manager will present her budget proposal to the Dallas City Council on August 10th.
