Enterprising entrepreneurs, who set up make shift parking lots around the Cowboys Stadium, will now have to follow the rules.
Monday night the City of Arlington unanimously passed a new ordinance covering 'special event' parking. That means, if you want to set up a parking lot in Arlington you'll have to get a permit and abide by the requirements.
Those without a permit could be fined up to $500.
The city doesn't want unsecure lots, empty lots, or residents creating their own lots around Cowboys Stadium. "To my neighbor, the average guest coming to town, we want them to be safe, have a good time and not worry about their car being stolen, vandalized or towed," said Trey Yelverton, with the City of Arlington.
Parking was a problem for people attending the first two events at Cowboys Stadium. One of the issues at the lots - lighting. Entrepreneurs didn't want to pay for fixed lighting. The city now says they can rent the lights.
While parking prices on neighboring lots won't be set, they will have to be posted outside the lot. "This ordinance gives you choices to park at the stadiums or somewhere else and have the assurance the operators have gone through a permit process that can give you satisfaction that they should be a good operator," said Yelverton.
Businesses can apply for permits starting Monday. City officials will then go out to the lot and make sure there's enough lighting and security. If everything meets requirements, a permit will be issued in about five days.
