'Molly The Trolley' To Hit Downtown Fort Worth

FORT WORTH (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― There's a new, fun way for visitors and residents to get from one end of downtown Fort Worth to the other. Thursday, a host of city officials, business leaders, and downtown employees gathered to kick off the new 'Molly the Trolley' service.

There's a longhorn cattle drive twice a day through downtown Fort Worth and Thursday The Fort Worth Herd led a fleet of Molly the Trolleys in a parade.

The goal is to connect the entertainment are, at the north end of downtown, with the central business district and southern convention area.

"We've always known Fort Worth to be a great, walkable, downtown. But this really extends that and makes it friendly and open to all of our guests, at all of our hotels," explained Tracy Gilmour with Sundance Square Marketing.

City leaders are hoping it's not just tourists, but that people who live and work downtown will stampede to the trolley. Fort Worth Mayor Mike Moncrief was clear on the future of the trolley. "Ridership is going to be the key to Molly's success. If nobody rides it, we're not going to keep it around. If you do ride it, it's going to be, I think, very important to the future."

Molly is even more important to Fort Worth because, city leaders are considering eventually having a comprehensive, retro-feel trolley system. If Molly can get the idea rolling with the public, it could put a larger trolley system on the fast track.

The new 'Downtown Get Around' Molly the Trolley service is free and will begin operation on Wednesday May 27 and run through August 22, 2009. The trolley will run every 15 minutes, making stops along Commerce, Main, Worthington, and Houston Streets.
