Republican Returns Tom DeLay's Old District To GOP
DALLAS (AP) ―
Republican Pete Olson has defeated Democratic U.S. Rep. Nick Lampson.
Olson recaptured the Houston-area seat once held by Tom DeLay on Tuesday, making Lampson the only incumbent congressman in Texas to lose.
Olson, a former Navy pilot who worked for two U.S. senators, was an early favorite. But the race had tightened as the national mood changed amid a souring economy and Barack Obama's candidacy triggered high Democratic voter registration.
Lampson won the seat in 2006, wresting it from Republicans who held it for 22 years with DeLay, who resigned under pressure following campaign finance and ethics scandal.
