Texas Presidential Primary Grows In Importance
AUSTIN (AP/ CBS 11 News) ―
The presidential campaigns are chugging toward Texas today.
That's as Democratic and Republican candidates plotted strategies for winning March 4th in the most delegate-rich presidential primary left on the board. Over ten-percent of the delegates needed to win the nomination are up for grabs.
Yesterday's "Super Tuesday" provided no clear winner in either party. That means the remaining candidates are setting their sights on several primaries in the coming week, including Louisiana and Washington on Saturday.
But Texas and Ohio remain coveted and potentially decisive prizes with their large loads of delegates on the same day.
The Democratic race between Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama appears it'll go on longer. A representative for the Clinton campaign said she should be in Texas in the next few days.
Republicans plan to fight it out in Texas too. John McCain is looking for the knockout blow while Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee are looking for political revivals.
Texas has an open primary, which means Democrats can vote for Republicans and vice versa. But there is a cost. If you vote in the primary, you can't switch party affiliation for any possible runoff.
A higher than normal turnout is expected this year.
