Dallas Business Helps Sponsor Irving Boycott
IRVING (CBS 11 News) ―
A business outside the City of Irving is helping sponsor a protest and rally aimed at Irving's immigration policy.
The group Accion American is urging the boycott of Irving business and passing out t-shirts for people.
The t-shirts sport the corporate sponsor of the protest a Lone Star Chrysler Jeep and Dodge. The dealership supports the Irving boycott even though it will be open tomorrow.
Officials at the dealership said its boycott support is a business decision. The sales manager said a significant percent of its customers is Hispanic.
The Irving mayor said he finds this all amusing.
"I wouldn't consider it appropriate," Irving Mayor Herbert Gears said when he saw the t-shirt. "I don't really know what the basis for that was. It's hard for me to comment. It's somewhat unusual and comical"
Gears said he's unsure what impact, if any, the boycott will have. Most businesses on Irving Boulevard were unaware of the proposal. Many owners agree their Spanish speaking clientèle has shrunk.
"Our clients have canceled. They don't want to come out and pay their insurance," said Ana Garcia, an accountant and insurance salesperson. "They are scared to get out of their homes. They are moving away and canceling their insurance."
The situation is different at a Touch of Beauty salon. Its owners said they are proud to be Hispanic, but they are unsure whether to close.
"It's going to be a big decision, and I guess I'll decide later or tomorrow morning to back my family up the Hispanic people," said salon owner Shirley Ramierz.
They worry that all Hispanics are viewed with suspicion.
"I've been here 10 years. She's been here 40 years. It hurts our hearts to hear that they are doing this to the Hispanics in Irving," said stylist Rosa Donohoe.
Mayor Gears said the program focuses on criminals, and it has reduced violent crime significantly in the community.
