Ross Ave. Name Change Rejected Again

DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― The Dallas Plan Commission today formally urged that Ross Avenue not be renamed after Cesar Chavez, but instead that name change efforts should now be re-focused on renaming Industrial Boulevard.

Renaming Industrial, not Ross, was the preferred choice of Hispanics from the beginning.  But because of awkward procedural rules, they found themselves having to try to keep the Ross Avenue issue alive.

Because the Ross Avenue change was proposed first, some commission members felt it now had to be taken off the table before proceeding on renaming Industrial.

Much of the audience was unwilling to give up on Ross until the Industrial renaming is a sure thing.

But supporters of historic Ross Avenue said they shouldn't be held hostage to political games.

Ross Avenue business representatives, big and small, argued a name change would be an economic and brand identity nightmare.

In the end, the Ross Avenue renaming was turned down by a single vote.

But that doesn't necessarily mean that issue is dead.  The full city council must still ratify the action.   And Chavez supporters promise to keep the pressure on to change the name of Industrial Boulevard to Cesar Chavez Avenue.
