A Texas Showdown This Week For Democrats
DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
The week leading up to the March 4th Primary could be the most important political week in Texas.
Both Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton are laying claim to the Lone Star State in preparation for Thursday's debate in Austin.
In Dallas Sunday, nearly 400 of Senator Obama's supporters rallied at Fair Park.
"Senator Obama is still marching and blowing the trumpet around the walls of Jericho," said State Senator Royce West. "He believes that a better America is on the other side."
Sunday's rally launched what is expected to be a vital week for Senator Obama. Early voting for the primary begins Tuesday. On the same day, the U.S. senator from Illinois will be in Houston and San Antonio; followed by a trip to North Texas on Wednesday.
"I know
who'd a thunk it? This race will come down to Texas," said former Dallas Mayor Ron Kirk, an Obama supporter. "We started it here, and we can end here."
Senator Clinton spent her day campaigning in Milwaukee for Tuesday's Wisconsin primary.
Meanwhile, just a few blocks away from the Obama rally, Clinton supporters were busy preparing their Dallas campaign headquarters for tomorrow's opening.
Many believe that a win in Texas could jump start Clinton's lagging campaign.
"Texas is critical to the nominating process this year," said Jessica Santillo with the Clinton campaign. "Hillary Clinton has been here. She has a long history in the state, and we are committed to capitalizing on that excitement."
Although Senator Obama will be in North Texas Wednesday, his campaign has yet to specify where he will appear.
