Democrats Ready For Texas Debate

AUSTIN (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― Thursday night, the eyes of Texas will be upon the University of Texas campus, where Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton will participate in their only Texas debate.

Clinton had pressed for a series of Texas debates prior to the March 4 primary, but this is the only one Obama agreed to.

Clearly he must be feeling pretty good about his position in Texas, although most polls indicate it's a dead heat.

Obama is riding a wave of momentum.  He has won 11 consecutive state contests since Super Tuesday and leads Clinton in the delegate race.

Clinton made a campaign stop on the border today, in Laredo.  She told the crowd of about 1,500 people that she will "fix this broken immigration system."

The debate will be held from 7pm-8:30pm, in UT's recreational sports center, just a few blocks south of Memorial Stadium.

Some of the approximately 1,800 debate spectators will sit in basketball bleachers, though high-quality folding chairs are set out for the expected VIPs, including Democratic elected officials and party super delegates.

The debate is sponsored by the LBJ School of Public Affairs and the Texas Democratic Party.

Stay with CBS11TV.COM for highlights and analysis of the debate. CBS 11 News reporter Jack Fink will also be blogging live from the event.
