Obama: Make Sure Your Child Can Speak Spanish

Nationwide Polls Show Americans Still Favor "Enlish Only"

 Campaign '08 Complete Coverage

 About The Candidates & Issues
MIAMI (CBS) ― Support for English-only laws has broad support across the country, but it's position that presidential candidate Barack Obama addressed earlier this month with a call toward bilingualism.

The Illinois senator explained his position is based on the belief the U.S. would be at an economic disadvantage if it remained a country geared toward English only.

In Georgia, he told a crowd, "Instead of worrying about whether immigrants can learn English -- they'll learn English -- you need to make sure your child can speak Spanish. You should be thinking about, 'How can your child become bilingual?' We should have every child speaking more than one language."

In a nationwide poll conducted by Rasmussen Reports, it found eighty-three percent place a higher priority on encouraging immigrants to speak English as their primary language. Just 13% take the opposite view and say it is more important for Americans to learn other languages.
