SMU Announces Bush Library

UNIVERSITY PARK (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― SMU made it official Friday and announced that it will host the Bush presidential library.

CBS 11 News first reported Thursday afternoon that a deal had been reached.  The agreement calls for a 99-year lease, which will automatically renew.

The official announcement came in an early afternoon news conference on the suburban Dallas campus.

Bush's old friend and former Commerce Secretary Don Evans, who now runs his foundation, made the announcement.  "I'm privileged to officially announce that the George W. Bush Presidential Library, Museum and Institute is coming home to SMU."

University president Gerald Turner also spoke.  He said, "We got a letter this morning from President Bush, informing us that he and the First Lady had selected SMU in Dallas to entrust us with their archives of their service to our nation."

SMU is located in University Park.

The school, which is Laura Bush's alma mater, had been negotiating with the Bush foundation for more than a year amid heated opposition.

The deal calls for SMU to host the library, museum and public policy institute.

The library and museum will be managed by the National Archives and Records Administration.  The institute will be run by the Bush Foundation.

The project is expected to cost more than $200 million.  School officials said that the university is donating the land, but that the foundation is responsible for raising the money to build it.

The center will be located on the east part of the campus, adjacent to Central Expressway.

The Bushes are expected to live in the Dallas area after he leaves office in January.

The library will be the third presidential library in the state.  The library of George H.W. Bush is located at Texas A&M University, in College Station.  The Lyndon Baines Johnson library is in Austin.
