Recount Underway For Tight Texas House Race

DALLAS (AP) ― Elections administrators started recounting thousands of ballots in a tight Dallas-area race Monday, with control of the Texas House at stake.

Democrat Bob Romano requested the recount after Republican incumbent Linda Harper-Brown's lead shrank to 20 votes after provisional ballots were counted. The recount for the House District 105 race should be finished by Friday, said Dallas County Elections Administrator Bruce Sherbet.

Republicans hold a narrow 76-74 majority in the House. A win for Romano could threaten the re-election of Republican House Speaker Tom Craddick by giving Republicans and Democrats an equal number of House members.

Sherbet said he's done recounts before and has never seen one flip an outcome.

"The end result of a recount is usually very close to what it was when you first count it," he said.

Democrats had sued last week over which counts should be counted. Democratic Party attorneys contended voters who cast a straight-party ballot on an electronic voting machine and then "emphasized" by selecting a candidate from the same party should be counted. A state district judge ruled that those legal questions should be answered by a higher court.

For the recount, elections workers will use the Texas Secretary of State's Office instructions, which say deselected or emphasis votes should not be counted.
