West Nile Information, Prevention & Resources
(CBS 11 / TXA 21)
It's mosquito season again, but North Texans can greatly reduce their chances of running into the West Nile Virus by taking some precautions.
Residents are reminded about the 3 Ds: Drain, Dress & DEET.
DRAIN- Get rid of ALL standing water.
- Empty, remove, cover or turn upside down any containers that will hold standing water (bottles, cans, tires, buckets, flower pots, etc.).
- Change water in pet dishes, wading pools and birdbaths several times a week.
- Cover trash containers so they will not collect water.
DRESS - Wear long, loose and light-colored clothing to avoid mosquito bites when outside.
DEET- Use insect repellent products with "DEET" or other FDA-approved repellents.
In addition to those precaustions, the Department of Health and Human Services has the following recommendations:
PROTECT YOUR HOUSE- Keep doors, porches and window screens in good condition and frames sealed tightly to help keep mosquitoes out of the house.
- Repair any leaking plumbing and outside faucets.
