Memorial Services Held For Plano Crash Victims

PLANO (CBS 11 News) ―

Memorial services were held Friday for a North Texas family and their two foster children all killed by a speeding driver.

Tears, mixed with joy, overflowed as friends and loved ones of five people who died in a terrible weekend traffic accident said their farewells.

The Hart family died Sunday on their way home from church.

At the Custer Road United Methodist Church, there was a celebration of the lives of Geoff and Christy Hart, and their daughter, Rebekah. The Hart family were members at Custer Road and were leaving services Sunday morning with their foster children, Kavinnesha Palmer and Raven Lucas, when the top of their van was ripped off when a speeding car ran a red light.

"Geoff, Christy, and Rebekah were always able to find joy and fun in sharing their love with each other and with kids facing an uphill battle, struggling to get their feet on the ground," friend Dan McMillan said during the service.

Across town, friends also gathered to mourn the two foster children killed in the crash. Kavinnesha was remembered as an intelligent young lady who never knew a stranger. Raven was said to be a gentle girl who loved to hug and be held.

"I never thought nothing like this could happen to me and I still don't believe it's true, even after today," the girl's mother, Pamela Palmer, said.

Meantime, details are emerging about the driver who caused the deadly crash. Affidavits supporting the arrest warrants for David Calhoun Jones say the event data recorder - a kind of "black box" on his rented Pontiac - showed him doing 98 miles an hour in a 40 mph speed zone.

The affidavits also say that after running the light the Metairie, Louisiana man tried to avoid stopped cars, but hit a curb and became airborne. Jones is charged with five counts of manslaughter and is under armed guard while he recovers at Medical Center of Plano.
