Construction Begins On Church Destroyed By Tornado
FORT WORTH (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
It has been a test of faith for members of Fort Worth's Valley Missionary Baptist Church.
On April 13, 2007,
a tornado packing winds of at least 100 miles an hour destroyed the east Fort Worth church. The building had been standing since 1951.
"God works in mysterious ways. He tore that church down for a reason - to see if we are the people we say we are," said church member Raymond Jones.
After the storm, members worshiped at a recreation center. They also met in a portable building half the size of the old church.
"But in all tragedies, there's room for improvement because there's nothing left," said Pastor James Redd, Jr.
The community rallied around the church members who vowed to rebuild, and now the future looks bright for this congregation.
Friday, church members celebrated the ceremonial groundbreaking in song. The new sanctuary will be double the size of the old church with room for 150 people.
It will take at least six months to build the new Valley Missionary Baptist Church. The material and labor for construction is all being donated.
"In the midst of tragedy, He's still in charge and He can make a blessing out of a tragedy if you just keep the faith," said Pastor Redd.
