Complete Harris Methodist Response

Following a CBS 11 investigation of elevators at Harris Methodist Hospital in Fort Worth -- where a man said he was pinned and injured -- the hospital released the following statement:

Harris Methodist Fort Worth Hospital
is the second busiest hospital in the Metroplex. We have 64 elevators in our hospital. We have only had two incidences reported year-to-date and only four incidences in 2007.

Harris Methodist Fort Worth Hospital files a report on every elevator incident reported to the hospital involving an injury, no matter how minor the incident might appear.  As required by state law, we file the report with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulations within 72 hours of being informed of the incident. We also contact the company contracted to service the elevators, and the service company sends an independent inspector to evaluate the elevator and generate an incident report. Each incident report filed in 2006 indicates that the elevator in question was working properly.

In April 2006, at the time of Mr. Fife's visit to the Harris Methodist Heart Center, the elevators in that building were new.  When Mr. Fife reported the incident, we followed standard policy, filed the appropriate report and contacted the elevator service company. The elevator service company promptly inspected the equipment and found no malfunction in the elevator itself or the safety sensors of the elevator doors. Acting through our insurance company, we also took care of Mr. Fife's initial medical care.
