The 2009 Scripps National Spelling Bee kicked off with dozens of students looking to be this year's top speller. Here are some key and quirky facts about the annual competition as revealed on Scripps' Web site.

Kavya Shivashankar of Olathe, Kansas, is this year's Scripps National Spelling Bee champion. Kavya, 13, made her fourth appearance at the bee, having finishing 10th, eighth and fourth over the last three years.
