L. Ron Hubbard was pulp stories author in the 1930s who, after service in World War II, turned to writing science-fiction and developing a real-life science he called Dianetics. In the 1950s, his teaching grew to become Scientology, branching into the domains of spiritual religion and secular education programs. Hubbard continued to expand his teachings until his death from a stroke in 1986. Today the Church of Scientology claims 10 million members worldwide. (AP)
