National Night Out began in 1984 as a crime and drug prevention event sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch. Locally, residents, law enforcement agencies, civic groups, businesses, HOAs and and local officials gathered Aug. 7 to heighten awareness in their communities. In 2006, more than 34 million people participated in events around the country.
