Dallas Hoops Team Offers To Forefeit 100-0 Win
Covenant School Apologizes
DALLAS (AP) ―
A Texas high school girls basketball team on the winning end of a 100-0 blowout has apologized to the losing school, calling the game "shameful and an embarrassment."
Officials from The Covenant School, a private Christian school in Dallas, said Thursday they are seeking to forfeit the win because "victory without honor is a great loss."
Covenant defeated The Dallas Academy 100-0 on Jan. 13.
"At times it was frustrating, but I kinda liked it," said freshman basketball player Shelby Hyatt. "I just remember having fun with my friends."
Covenant led 59-0 at halftime.
"I tried to focus on what they did right and how proud I was of them for their effort, how they didn't quit," said the school's coach and athletic director, Jeremy Civello. "They continued to play no matter what the score was."
"We really never pay attention to the score," said assistant coach Andy Lott. "That's not why we coach these girls."
The Dallas Academy has eight girls on its varsity team and just 20 girls in the school. The academy specializes in teaching students with what it calls "learning differences," such as short attention spans or difficulty in concentrating.
Only 8 of the girls are on the team and many have never played before.
"The long you work together as a team, the better you get," said Shelby. "So maybe if most of the girls stay, we can learn a lot more."
A parent who attended the game told The Associated Press that Covenant was making 3-pointers -- even in the fourth quarter. Renee Peloza, whose daughter plays for Dallas Academy, says winning team should have "backed off."
The coach is rescheduling the rest of the season to find more balanced opponents.
Meanwhile, Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban is inviting the Dallas Academy players to see an NBA game from his suite.
