Jason Kidd Named Western 'Player Of The Week'

DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― Dallas Mavericks guard Jason Kidd has been named Western Conference 'Player of the Week' for games played between March 30 and April 5.

During that time, Kidd helped the Mavs grab three important wins versus the Minnesota Timberwolves, Miami Heat and Phoenix Suns, during which the 15 year NBA veteran averaged 9.8 points, 3.5 rebounds, 13.5 steals and 33 minutes.

Kidd earned his 10,142nd career assist on Sunday night when the Mavericks beat the Suns. With this, he passed Magic Johnson and moved into third on the list of all-time NBA career assists. Kidd now only trails Mark Jackson and John Stockton.

This was also the second time in Kidd's career that he reached at least 20 assists in a game, and he set two Dallas Mavericks franchise marks for assists in a regulation game and assists in a half.

This is Kidd's third time to receive the 'Player of the Week' honor in a Mavericks uniform and his first time since returning to the team in February 2008.

"I'm honored to win this award in a conference with so many great players, especially point guards," Kidd said. "I obviously give a lot of credit to my teammates who have worked extremely hard as we push toward the playoffs."

The Dallas Mavericks are currently ranked eighth in the Western Conference playoff race and can clinch their ninth consecutive playoff berth with a win over the Utah Jazz, or a Phoenix loss to the New Orleans Hornets, on Wednesday night.

Kidd averages 9.2 points, 6.1 rebounds, 8.6 assists, 2.1 steals and 35.6 minutes with 76 starts for the season. Within the NBA, he ranks fifth in assists per game and third in steals per game, and is one of only six players to have multiple triple-doubles.
