NASCAR Rolls Into TMS During Weak Economy
FORT WORTH (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
It's NASCAR time again at Texas Motor Speedway, but with the dragging economy many wonder if it will be the Winner's Circle or Pit Road for this year's race.
Once upon a time NASCAR started with people's old hot rods. Now, it costs around 25-million dollars to keep a top notch driver going. Driver Martin Truex wonders if auto racing can support itself in this economy.
"There are some good teams out there that are having trouble
finding sponsorship
there's teams losing cars and talking about shutting the doors."
Others, like Texas Motor Speedway President Eddie Gossage, say the sport will speed right along through the current 'Caution' flag. "A sponsor goes away and a sponser comes in and we are certainly seeing that in 2009."
The economy certainly hasn't kept devoted race fans away. Dian and Brock Bowers drove to Fort Worth from Denver for this weekend.
"You're talking to people who drove 800-miles to watch a 400 mile race" said Dian.
TMS President Gossage says NASCAR has always been a fan-friendly sport.
