It's called flyball and if you've never seen it, you're missing something! It's racing for dogs and it's a sport that is growing.
CBS station WJZ-TV's Ron Matz reports that teams from Baltimore are getting ready for the next competition.
"Flyball started as a stupid pet trick on the David Letterman show back in the 1970s. Herbert Wagner came on and did it and it has grown from there," Carlee Lee Detweiller, flyball training director, said.
The dogs develop their skills at the Oriole Dog Training Center in Woodlawn.
"The world record for this [flyball] is 14.97 seconds, so that's a pretty fast bunch of dogs. Any breed can compete," Detweiller said.
Rudy, 9, is one of the best. He was adopted from the Howard County Animal Shelter, and he is now on the "No Speed Limit" team.
"Rudy was a shelter dog. We adopted him. My daughter worked at the Howard County Animal Shelter and he was there, so we adopted him for flyball," Billie Hall, Rudy's master, said. "The dogs love it. You have all these dogs in this chaos and these dogs know their job. They love it! Just look at their eyes. It tells the whole story."
"There are now about eight or nine hundred registered teams with the North American Flyball Association, which is where we race," Detweiller said. "We play all the time. We are competing at least every month if not twice a month. There are local tournaments at the Howard County fairgrounds and up in York and we just had one at Fort Meade."
The next tournament for the "No Speed Limit" team is in September at the Howard County fairgrounds.
