Age Violations Could Sideline Plano Pee Wee Team
Cheating Allegations Might Keep Pee Wee Team Out Of Finals
PLANO (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
A suspended Pee Wee football team in Plano will find out Friday if it will be allowed to play in a championship game this weekend.
The league says public records indicate two of the boys playing for the GA Giants are too old to play in the team.
The teams are for 9- and 10-year-olds.
This controversy started a week ago when someone allegedly overheard one of the players say he couldn't wait to play in junior high.
The league says it has investigated and public records indicate two of the boys are too old to play on the team.
The coaches met Friday night with parents, who were clearly angered.
The parents say they followed all the rules and provided birth certificates 10 weeks ago when everyone signed up.
A league attorney said the records show a 12-year-old is playing on the team.
"I mean we would have had a whole different news story and a whole different situation had that 12-year-old injured a 9-year-old child and the 9-year-old's parent found out about it," Mark Bennett said.
If the rules were broken, the league says the whole team is suspended from playing in Saturday's Pee Wee Super Bowl.
"I talked to a few of the kids today. They were really disappointed. A few of them were crying and didn't really understand why they weren't able to play in a game, like I said that they worked hard to play in," said Mike Hills, G.A. Giants coach.
An appeal hearing is scheduled for Friday night to determine what happens.
