Mavs Coach Popeye Jones Arrested For DWI

RICHARDSON (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― Dallas Mavericks assistant coach Ronald "Popeye" Jones is facing a DWI charge.

Jones, 39, was arrested by Richardson police on Greenville Avenue at about 9:30 Sunday night.

People in the neighborhood at the time told police they saw a vehicle driving erratically.  An officer stopped the car and tried to give Jones a breathalyzer test, but he refused.

Police say Jones briefly resisted arrest and they forced him to the ground to get the handcuffs on him.  They say the scrapes on his face are a result of the struggle.

Jones bonded out of jail at about 4:30 Monday morning.

Jones played for the Mavericks during two separate stretches in his career.  He's now a player development coach for the team.

We emailed Mavericks owner Mark Cuban asking for a comment on the arrest.  He replied, "When you start reporting and your management comments on 100pct ktvt employees who are arrested, we will do the same thing."

We also talked to Mavericks head coach Rick Carlisle about the arrest, but he had no comment.
