Free Cemetery Space Being Offered In North Texas
NORTH TEXAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
You've likely heard offers for a free month's rent or a free night's stay at a hotel, but what about a free final resting place? That's right, free burial plots are being offered in North Texas.
So you're flipping through the morning paper looking for coupons and something catches your eye. You come across a coupon to house your earthly remains.
"Most folks don't deal with this sort of thing until there's been a death in their family and a lot of times it's too late," said Mark Andrews of Bluebonnet Hills Funeral Home.
The complementary cemetery space offer is good at nine North Texas funeral homes.
"The burial space is worth between $2,900 and $7,000, but the funeral home benefits out of this because if you use their space you'll use them for the arrangements which cost between $8,000 and $10,000," explained Andrews.
Even the funeral business isn't immune to the economic downturn. "We have seen a little bit of decrease in pre-arrangement because they [potential customers] want to keep their money where it is. They want to hang on to it," said Andrews.
There's really no catch with the free burial space, but the funeral home gets to choose the spot.
While no one wants to think about losing loved ones, or their own mortality, professionals say the idea is to get people to think about the costs associated with death... before it's too late.
