Dallas Billboards Show New Face Of Hunger
By Arezow Doost
DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
Along Central Expressway in Dallas, billboards line the highway.
But it's one in particular -- a billboard with a very personal story -- which the North Texas Food Bank hopes will stay with each driver.
It's Ray Holt's story. "I was let go back in February," he said, "and I have been unemployed since that time."
Stories like his are now up on billboards around Dallas. In a recession, he's the new face of hunger.
With the economy down and the holidays coming up, the food bank says thousands of North Texans who never thought they would need help are now having a hard time putting food on the table.
A new U.S. Department of Agriculture report just released says Texas ranks second highest nationwide for people at risk of hunger.
"Previously, people would need emergency food assistance when they were not able to make ends meet," said Paul Wunderlich of the North Texas Food Bank. "These days they need urgent food assistance for circumstances beyond their control."
And as food bank volunteers pack up boxes of food for pantries, Ray Holt is grateful. He's now volunteering at Minnie's Food Pantry in Plano -- the same pantry which helped put food on his table.
"It's just a circumstance," Holt said. "The circumstance does not define who you are."
