Using Twitter To Network And Find Jobs

DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― Social networking sites like Facebook.com and MySpace.com can help you reconnect and keep up with friends and family.

People are also using those sites to network and find jobs.

Alex Tan is a senior public relations account executive for Golin Harris in Dallas.

"I like to keep a pulse on the industry," he said.

To do that, he uses Twitter.com, a micro-blogging site.

On the site, people only post their status updates in 140 characters or less. Those posts, called tweets, are seen by the person's online network on the site.

"With Twitter, things happen instantly. News can break really quickly first on Twitter," Tan said.

Twitter.com is different from other social networking sites in other ways too. There isn't a place to post a lengthy description about yourself or share photos in albums like on other sites.

"It's thousands of conversations around the world about many different topics," Tan explained. "It gives you the power to opt into these conversations."

And on Twitter.com, connections are made quickly.

"It is more of an open dialogue that is part of your personal brand," he said.

By using keywords to search for conversations, Tan has created a network of clients, friends and people with similar interests. "You can choose the people you want to follow," he said.

And sometimes the people you follow can give you more than an interesting 'tweet.'

"There are recruiters on there, and I've heard of tons of people who have actually secured jobs on Twitter," he said. "The reason is that you're following people that interest you, that are in your line of work."
