Survival Kit: Find A New Job

(CBS 11 / TXA 21) Lost your job?  Once you get over the initial shock, you already have a new job: looking for a new one.  Experts say you should treat looking for a job as a full-time job all its own.  Here are some specific tips to help you get started.  We'll add more in the days and weeks ahead.

How do I file for unemployment benefits?
Click here to contact the Texas Workforce Commission at its website.  The Commission also has several phone numbers you can call.  In the Dallas area, call (972) 339-6200.  In Fort Worth, call (817) 420-1600.  In other areas, you can call toll-free 1-800-939-6631.

What other benefits are available?
The Texas of Health and Human Services Commission offers everything from financial assistance to food aid to health care programs.  Visit www.hhsc.state.tx.us/help/index.html.  You can also check GovBenefits.gov.  It's a clearinghouse site run by the federal government that covers benefits from government agencies of all sizes, from the local level all the way up to federal departments.

How should I prepare to find a new job?
The TWC has a lot of good information about preparing for a job search.  If you aren't ready to look for a job, your search will be much harder.  For skills assessments, tips on writing a great resume, understanding the job market and more, click here to see the TWC's Job Hunter's Guide.

Lifehacker.com also has a lot of good tips for job seekers.

Okay, I'm ready to search.  Where should I start looking for a new job?
