Layoff Leads North Texan To Market Homemade Salsa
ARLINGTON (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
A North Texas man has become an entrepreneur by bottling his grandfather's salsa recipe. The venture started a year ago when he was out of work and trying to find a way to support his family.
The Whole Foods Store, on Lamar in Arlington, is just one of the places where you can get a jar of Willy's Salsa.
Troy Peoples started making the salsa from a recipe his grandfather gave him, decades ago. Troy said his friends always loved it, so when he became unemployed, he decided to sell it.
The salsa, that's named after Peoples' grandfather - George "Willy" Willis who was a Pearl Harbor survivor, started selling right here in Texas. "I never knew him to make it. I don't know where he got it from and he's gone, so I can't ask him," said Troy.
Troy went to Whole Foods personally and asked them if they would sell the salsa. Folks there loved it; and said yes. "I liked him instantly, from the get go. A really nice, humble, sincere person with a great product," explained Whole Foods Promotions Specialist Melinda Montgomery.
Troy says it's the taste that sets his salsa apart. "It's made by hand. I made it by hand; now my manufacturer is making it by hand," he explained. "I didn't want it any other way. It has to be my grandfather's recipe."
Just yesterday, Peoples found out that Whole Foods now wants to sell his salsa in 19 stores, in their southwest region.
