Texas Democrats Cry Foul Over Suspicious E-Mail

AUSTIN (AP) ―

An e-mail circulating around the state falsely warns voters that casting a straight-ticket Democratic ballot won't register a vote for Barack Obama.

The e-mail apparently targets supporters of Democrat Barack Obama, and Democratic leaders are crying foul. First, they say it's untrue. Second, they think it could cause people using the eSlate electronic voting machines to inadvertently cancel their downballot straight-ticket voters. That would eliminate potentially millions of votes for Democratic candidates in state and county races.

Texas Democratic Party spokesman Hector Nieto says that, with eSlate, punching the Obama button after punching the straight-ticket button actually will cancel the straight-ticket vote.

State party officials have posted a warning message on their Web site and encourage straight-party voting as a way to ensure Obama and other Democrats on the ballot get a vote.

No comment yet from the Texas Republican Party.
