Dallas Web Designers Ready To Compete With Google
DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
It's a search engine with a funny name, but the designers of "Viewzi" hope their new search engine will become so popular that users will "Viewzi this" and "Viewzi that."
Eight men from Dallas and four from California are less than two weeks away from officially launching their new company, and they admit they're a bit nervous.
They are preparing to compete with some of the biggest names in the business, including Google, Yahoo, and MSN. Viewzi executives believe they've got it right.
"Honestly, a year ago this seemed like a crazy thing," said Brandon Cotter, Chief Viewzer. "You're going into a market that is dominated by the 800 pound gorilla Google. It just seemed like a crazy thing to even attempt to build something that was competing with Google in this way."
At first glance Viewzi looks like the display of an iPhone or iTunes, but the Dallas-based company has no ties to Apple. Large icons scroll across the screen when a user searches for a subject and many of the images are colorful still pictures or video.
Viewzi works with any browser and beneath each preview page there are hundreds of options for the customer. Those options include Google, Yahoo and MSN.
"The things that keep me up at night are worrying about if it really does become successful," said Steve DeVoll, a Viewzi executive. The company's goal is to have 100-million viewers each month, which they say represents one-percent of the market.
Viewzi debuts for consumers to use June 9 and will have no advertisements.
