Man Shoots At Cops After He Robs Convenience Store

DALLAS (CBS 11 News) ― Dallas police watched as a man walked into a convenience store and robbed the clerk at gunpoint. They were shot at when they confronted the man.

The robbery occurred a day after city leaders voted to establish new standards for making these stores safer.

The officers said they happened to be in the area and watched as the man entered the Fina store.

They confronted the man outside as he tried to run from the store. According to reports, the man fired at the officers and they fired back. No one was injured. They later arrested him at a nearby apartment complex, where they also found the stolen money.

City leaders know convenience stores can be convenient targets for crime, but know police officers may not be this close during a crime.

On Wednesday, the Dallas City Council unanimously approved recommendations from a citywide task force to make these stores safer.

The new ordinance will require stores to have digital surveillance cameras, 24-hour video recording and panic alarms.

Another recommendation includes clear sight lines to the cash registers -- so police or passersby can see if a clerk is in trouble.

The new requirements will be phased in the coming months.
