Denton County Woman: Online Sex Ad Not True
Valentine's Day Joke Turns Into Harrassment For Woman
DENTON (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
A Denton woman received a seemingly endless stream of phone calls and texts messages from lonely men cruising CraigsList.org.
Jennifer Orr said the calls began on Valentine's night.
"One of them, which actually threw me off guard, said something along the lines of, 'I want to meet up with you and have a good time. Is HIV okay?'"
The fake advertisement promised something Orr had not. "Basically promised sexual favor favors for the night of Valentine's Day, because I was lonely and needed some love," she said.
Orr said she thinks she knows who posted the ad. There was a young man whose advances she stopped.
"He would text me saying, 'I thought you looked hot tonight. I would do you in 2 seconds.' That crossed the line from okay to not okay," she said.
Orr said she blocked the man from further access to her Facebook page, but but he apparently obtained her pictures through her friend who still had access.
Orr said she pressed a confession out of him by text. She said he told her it was all a joke. But it was the kind of joke that broke the law.
"A joke doesn't cross that line of harassment and taking it to the next step," said Orr. "That's not a joke anymore."
Here are some tips to keep you safe on social networking sites:
1. Control the information you post.
2. Think about limiting the people who have access to your profile.
3. Keep personal information to yourself.
4. Definitely don't post sensitive information like social security numbers, for instance.
5. Think twice about posting your photo. It can be altered and broadcast in ways you may not be happy with.
6. Trust your gut if you have suspicions.
