21 Things You Need to Know About Women's Health

1. A decrease in women's sexuality, or any negative change since delivery of her baby, can now be addressed and easily improved.
2. The minor surgery to restore normal anatomy is done frequently and with great success.
3. This is a benefit covered by all insurance companies.
4. The recovery is usually a few days to two weeks, depending on the woman's needs.
5. Pelvic organ prolapse occurs when pelvic structures (like the bladder or rectum) bulge or protrude into the vaginal wall.
6. Sometimes, pelvic organ prolapse is described as a hernia into the vaginal wall
7. Many different structures can prolapse. The bladder, the uterus, the vagina, the small bowel or the rectum are common structures that can be herniated and cause prolapse.
8. You may be experiencing pelvic organ prolapsed if you answer "yes" to any of the following questions:
Does it sometimes feel like you have a mass bulging out of your vagina?
Is walking or standing difficult?
Is sexual intercourse painful?
Do you have difficulty emptying your bladder or bowel?
Bladder prolapse is sometimes referred to as cystocele.
Rectal prolapse is referred to as rectocele.
9. Prolapse Repair Systems may be the right option for you if you experience the above symptoms.
10. The two systems take graft augmented vaginal surgery to a new level by standardizing minimally invasive approaches to restore function.
ApogeeTM is a vaginal vault suspension procedure. When combined with IntePro or InteXen apical and posterior wall repairs can be made.
PerigeeTM is a surgical solution for bladder prolapse (cystocele) that is performed vaginally using InteXen or IntePro.
12. Many women leak small amounts of urine at times.
13. These leaks can occur with certain physical activities or with other stress, such as coughing.
14. Women may lose urine when they hear the sound of running water or when their hands are in water.
15. Some women feel the urge to urinate and cannot control it.
16. Others leak urine only while they are pregnant.
17. When leaks become frequent or severe enough to be a problem, it is called urinary incontinence or loss of bladder control.
18. There are many options for treatment for incontinence, including behavioral treatments, physical therapy (i.e., Kegel exercises), medications and devices such as the vaginal sling.
19. Drugs that help control muscle spasms can help prevent leaks. Others can strengthen the muscle of the urethra. Some help relax a bladder that is too active.
20. Did you know that one in five women suffer from heavy periods? This bleeding can be emotionally and physically devastating, causing many women to limit their activities and lifestyles.
21. Many options are available, including drug therapy, minimally invasive treatments or a hysterectomy. Her Option® Cryoablation Therapy from AMS, the Novasure® System from Cytyc Surgical Products Division and Hydro ThermAblator® (HTA) are three options for women with heavy periods that are looking for an alternative to a hysterectomy. Both of these options can be performed in-office. Most patients find the procedure to be relatively pain free.
