Boston Bans Dumping Boat Toilets Into Harbor

BOSTON (AP) ― First the tea. Now the toilets.

Boston is banning boaters from emptying their on-board toilets into Boston Harbor.

Approval of the rules change is expected from the Environmental Protection Agency today, making Boston the largest urban area in the nation to outlaw such dumping.

Some 8,700 boats use Boston Harbor and about half of them have onboard toilets. Before agreeing to the ban, the EPA wanted to make sure there are enough facilities for boaters to pump out their tanks.

Boston says the change will help clean up the beaches and harbor islands and improve stocks of shellfish.

Violators face fines of up to $2,000.
