Billboard Promises That Burleson Students Will Die

by Joel Thomas
BURLESON, TX (CBS 11 News) ― An ominous billboard in Burleson is shocking parents and causing some concern.

The sign is promising that dozens of Burleson High School students will die on April 27.

"At first, I was just like, 'What is that all about exactly? What is up with that?'" said Tammy Hood, a local parent.

A closer look shows the sign to be one part of a program called "Shattered Dreams."

The road in front of the high school will be closed on April 27 and a huge DWI accident scene will be staged, right down to the gory victims.

Throughout the day, every 15 minutes, students will be removed from class on a gurney to symbolize how frequently DWI-related car wrecks kill teens.

"We're saying, "good." We want you to be disturbed," said Jerry Stringer of the Burleson Police Department. "We've had people tell us it's in appropriate. I don't know if that's really true, but there is shock value."

The shock value doesn't stop at one program or a billboard. Pictures of deadly DWI wrecks are posted at the school's entrance.

"If this can help the children stop and think, just one to stop and think, than it's worth every bit of it," said high school staff member Nancy Payne.
