Man Allegedly Steals SUV To Make Court Appearance
VALLEJO, Calif. (CBS) ―
It's a new one from the stupid criminal files: An Oakland man allegedly stole a car Friday in order to make a court appearance in Vallejo where he was scheduled to face car theft charges, CBS station KOVR-TV reports.
It was a very bold move by the man.
"He was laughing at his own stupidity," said Ofc. Chris Linehan, CHP.
Linehan says the man's arrest was the easiest one he ever made.
The vehicle: a 2000 Land Rover. It's a luxury SUV that was equipped with a LoJack device.
The arrest happened in the parking lot of the Vallejo Courthouse. The man was on his cell phone when the officer walked up to the car. The man looked at the officer and said: "It's not my car." Ofc. Linehan replied: "We know."
The man was arrested and taken to the jail where he was held only days prior. He refused a jailhouse interview, but said he would talk exclusively to anyone who could post his $45,000 bail.
