Police have uncovered an elaborate underground bunker in Carver that was allegedly used as a marijuana factory.
Officers went to William Nickologianes's home Thursday afternoon to help his girlfriend pick up her belongings because she took out a restraining order against him, reported CBS station WBZ-TV in Boston.
That's when police say they found a plastic shopping bag full of pot and drug paraphernalia in the kitchen.
Nickologianes came home a few minutes later. He had just been released from jail after being arrested earlier in the day for domestic assault and battery and illegal possession of a shotgun without a license.
Police obtained a search warrant and allegedly found more marijuana throughout the house.
Then, officers went into the back yard, where they say they found a pit ten feet into the ground with a strong smell of pot in it.
When investigators went down into the hole, they discovered the bunker - approximately 20 feet wide by 40 feet long - with several marijuana plants in different stages of growth.
There was also an elaborate assembly of fans and ventilation ducts with motors connected to the outside by vents. It also included an irrigation system, and assorted grow lights with sophisticated shades on pullies, electrical timers and various growth enhancers.
Officers say they also found several books that logged and outlined the growth for previous crops. There was also a DVD on how to grow pot.
Nickologianes was arrested and charged with one count of cultivating marijuana, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and possession of steroids.
