Mail carrier versus dog: the eternal conflict. Contrary to the cliché, some dogs aren't trying to chase mail carriers away, they can't wait to see them. That's because some carriers try to soothe the savage beasts along their routes with doggie treats, reports CBS station WCCO-TV in Minneapolis.
But handing out treats is against the rules of the United State Postal Service and dog lovers are taking the news hard.
"They wait for him all day, I think. They look out here onto the street. I assume they're just waiting for him to come," said dog owner Luke Geisler.
"They can tell when she drives up down the block, they're barking all the way when she walks up," said dog owner Landy Geisler. "Scraping at the fence."
"We have an 11-year-old Sharpay. She just absolutely loves the treats," said dog owner Joe Siedler.
The delight of many dogs came to an end last week when a Richfield neighborhood, filled with all these dog lovers, received a letter from their pet-loving carrier saying the U.S. Postal Service would no longer allow her to carry dog treats.
"I think it's petty, I really do. I think that the mail carriers if they want to carry a treat for the dogs that are on their route then they should be allowed to," said Sieler.
Post office administrators say it's a policy that's been on the books for more than two decades.
"There's really only one sure way to keep a dog from biting and that's not have contact with them," said U.S. Postal Service Spokesperson Pete Nowacki.
One postal worker and dog owner who fills in on other carrier's routes is all for the no treat policy.
"Then if I come along and I don't have treats, and the dog is going to expect a treat and I don't have it, and then we could have a problem," said postal worker Kathy Unger.
The postal service wanted to reinforce the treat ban policy this summer because in Minneapolis alone 24 postal carriers have been bitten so far this year.
