1. Capture the image both vertically and horizontally.
2. Get in close to your subject.
3. Photograph on the same level as your subject.
4. Follow the Rule of Thirds.
5. Experiment using flash outdoors.
6. Turn your subjects away from the sun.
7. Try unusual angles.
8. Avoid cluttered backgrounds.
9. Frame your subject using foreground images (such as tree branches).
10. Pay attention to lines that will lead the viewer' eye in a specific direction.
11. Look for interesting reflections and shadows.
12. Portraits should preferably be taken using a telephoto setting to avoid distortion.
13. When taking portraits, always take more than one. Otherwise, you will be sure to get the subject blinking!
14. If you are going to shoot directly into the sun (i.e. sunset shot), shade the lens.
15. Don't just take posed shots, but try to catch your subject off-guard, especially with children.
16. As a guest at a wedding, let the professional photographer take the posed shots. Instead, photograph candid shots, settings, and smaller details.
17. When taking pictures through glass, such as at the zoo, do not use flash and hold your camera as close to the glass as possible.
18. Choose one main point of interest.
19. Experiment with black and white photography, especially when capturing contrasting tones and patterns, communicating moods and producing interesting silhouettes.
20. Take time to walk around and find the best viewpoint.
21. Make sure the battery is fully charged on your camera.
