Fla. Radio Station Blares Music Underwater

MIAMI (CBS) ― The lyrics of Octopus's Garden, a popular Beatles song, begins with these words: "I want to be under the sea."

Well, on Saturday they got their wish, CBS station WFOR-TV reported. A radio station celebrated its 25th edition of the Underwater Music Festival at the Florida Key National Marine Sanctuary south of Big Pine Key marking the 40th anniversary of the Beatles' release of their "Yellow Submarine" album.

Four musicians dressed up as the Fab Four pretended to play instruments while Yellow Submarine and Octopus's Garden piped back to listeners on land and underwater using specialized speakers suspended beneath boats. All the songs were originally recorded underwater. WWUS, the radio station that broadcast the special event, said it's an only-in-the-Keys event.  

"As far as we know, it's the only place in the entire world where people can dive on a coral reef and actually listen to music specially selected to go and sound good underwater," said festival founder Bill Becker of WWUS.

A set dedicated to Michael Jackson were also played underwater including songs like "I'll Be There" and "You Are Not Alone."

"We also played his 'Earth Song,' which I think was very much in tune with his environmental sensitivities and ours as well here in the Florida Keys," Becker said.
